Lesson Plan
Overview
The topic of the week: Strategies to improve overall health. It is important as leading a healthy lifestyle is arguably the most important thing that leads to overall happiness. There are numerous aspects to leading a healthy lifestyle, and whether you know them or not, it’s always nice to learn about.
Lesson Objectives
The four important aspects or areas
- Physical Health
- Diet
- Mental Health
- Hobbies
Content
Physical Health – outline activities such as going to the gym, jogging, outdoor games, hiking etc., and their benefits
Diet – outline how to have a healthy diet and the proper amount of food from each food category (fats and sugars, protein, vegetables and carbs)
Mental health – outline how to take care of your own mental health, using activities such as journalling, meditating and stress relievers
Hobbies – outline how it is important to have time for hobbies and doing things you love.
Application
Learners would apply this skill in everyday life, leading to a positive outcome concerning their overall health.
Reflection
Ask questions to prompt the learner to think about what they just read such as:
- What are you going to do differently in the future regarding your health?
- Is there anything from the list that you already do?
Learning with Interactive Media
In this course, I feel the active and passive learning components are quite well balanced. There is always a read/watch section that provides a lot of insight and context for the lesson/module. Then there is the active part of actually creating games and lessons/blogs. Even though it is at a smaller scale, a taste of creating infographics, screencasts and games is a great introduction to the skillset. I particularly liked creating the screencast, as without an active learning component for that module, I would not have discovered the difficulty of creating a screencast. That was definitely a cool introduction but also a reminder that there is so much more to work on for me in terms of speaking clearly and concisely. In other courses, I find that there is a combination of both sides of the spectrum. Some classes are literally just listening to the professor speak and do 3 exams a term, while some have a lab component involved. I am currently taking ASL (American Sign Language), which is a course that perfectly combines both passive and active learning. We have to really focus on watching the professor sign, then we replicate the sign. Since our professor is deaf, there is no talking in the class and he really does a great job of communicating ideas and meanings through signs, even if we don’t know the signs!
I think my first experience with H5P was solid. I think the drag-and-drop activity of the H5P would be my favourite as I think it forces the learner to put things together and connect the dots, which helped me a lot in previous courses. It is a great way to help learners connect ideas, especially for intricate and complex topics. The activity that I think would require the most resources to create would be the video, as filming an educational video itself is already challenging enough!
I also think Merill’s idea that solving real-world problems really engages the learner is very true. Let’s take the idea of math at first, if we provide a scenario of using math to do taxes later in life as a learning activity, I feel like students are much more motivated and feel incentivized to put effort into learning the math. This is due to students realizing that they may use this skill later in life. It is much better than teaching students a concept that they think they’d have no use for.
